Brave New House

I am usually instantly clear on whether I like a building or not.  Even if it’s a “love it but it needs the following tweaks” reaction. The building I am sharing with you today had such a strong reaction of INdecision that I had to ponder it for 2 weeks before discussing with you.

Glorious light, deliciously incongruent with it’s neighbours, philosophically futuristic, arguably a light carbon footprint, beautiful lines and overlapping planes.  Literally a breath of fresh air.

So, you ask, tapping your foot, what’s with all the pondering and procrastination?

Well I don’t know if it’s cultural, personal or mental (take that as you want) but the fact that the house is mostly transparent is simultaneously fabulous and frightening.

This is where philosophy joins paths with design thinking.  Why the feeling of vunerability? Why do I mind? Do the neighbours actually mind?  Is it my morning hair or PJ’s at noon on Sunday? Would I feel like a victim of voyeurism?  But people stare at people all day.  At work, on the train/bus/escalator, in the car next door, behind the retail counter, in the coffee shop.

I am unable to answer this/these question/s. I would love to hear your insights.

In the interim I have to state that I adore this house, it’s architectural success, it’s playfulness and it’s confidence.  Maybe when I grow up I will build one.

Here is the full gallery on it.  Enjoy and please let me know your thoughts.
